The province of Drenthe was the first region to receive the UCI Bike Region Label in October 2016. As the leading cycling province in the Netherlands, we are, of course, very proud of this! We earned the label by performing a number of showcases.

Launched in 2015, the UCI Bike Region Label supports and rewards cities and regions that not only host major UCI cycling events, but also invest in developing a quality cycling network and related infrastructure. Advantages for the city or region are the international recognition of the cycling strategy and it increases the attractiveness as a cycling destination.

What does the UCI do?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/td>\n

The mission of the UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) is to develop ‘cycling’ at all levels: from elite competitions to cycling as a leisure activity and means of transport.<\/p>\n

These different levels of sport are closely linked: people who are given the opportunity to see an elite cycling event are probably motivated to cycle more themselves.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

UCI’s vision<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/td>\n

The long-term goal is to develop a network of UCI Bike Regions. This will make it possible to spread examples of these regions in the field of cycling worldwide.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

The assessment<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/td>\n

To be considered for the UCI label, cities and regions will be assessed on the basis of a wide range of criteria demonstrating how elite cycling events are part of an overall strategy to promote and reach safe cycling for all.<\/p>\n
