‘The label is the energy we need to be able to continue to improve, guarantee and maintain the continuity of our cycling province.’

What role does the UCI Bike Region label play in profiling a cycling province?

The label is the energy we need to be able to continue to improve, guarantee and maintain the continuity of our cycling province. A great deal of work has already been done with good results, but it takes a great deal of attention and energy to preserve them.

What is your contribution to cycling in Drenthe?

My contribution is broad as an organiser and enthusiast and as chairman of several foundations of cycling in all disciplines. We organise many great competitions and tours, for tourists as well as professionals, with also annually the Geopark Hondsrug Classic, to which we can add the National Championship MTB marathon on September 30, 2018. Also, the Baggelhuizerplas MTB races, the Top Competition time trial and the Sportlandgoed cyclo-cross race bring many top cyclists, youth cyclists and audiences to Drenthe.

What events can we expect to take place in the coming years?

Wonderful challenges such as a World Cup on the road generate unexpected enthusiasm among many people. Anything is possible. If we all want it, there are plenty of opportunities.

What else can cycling bring to Drenthe?

Cycling brings a lot to Drenthe. I notice this in my daily contacts in the Netherlands. There is a very positive response to the initiatives, but also to all the events and attention which we now experience in Drenthe. People visit the events and like to stay in the province.

What are your ambitions for Drenthe as a cycling province and how do you contribute to this?

My ambitions and enthusiasm don’t change and by organising our races and tours we continue to contribute to putting cycling in Drenthe even more firmly on the map. New bike events and championships are about to arrive and we can’t wait to highlight those!
